Teen Boys, YouTube, and Body Image

YouTube has recently announced its intention to restrict the content available to teenage boys, Previously much of the research conducted about the negative impact of algorithm fed content has been focused on girls, and the consequential damage to their body image, and mental health. YouTube’s announcement is a much overdue acknowledgement that young men suffer from the unclear societal expectations around masculinity and body image.

As a society we are aware that social media, creating an unrealistic, heavily filtered aspiration for female beauty has led to all manner of undesirable impacts, including body dysmorphia and associated eating issues, low self esteem and accompanying feelings of inadequacy. This latest move is a recognition that young men can be equally susceptible. Fitness videos posted by influencers with overly muscular physiques, chiselled abs and hyper masculine attitudes create an unrealistic expectation among young men. Wrapped up in innocuous seeming encouragement to eat more healthily or exercise more, what is being promoted can often involve restrictive diets and unwise or dangerous reliance on supplements.

How can you help your teenager to develop a healthy, positive self image?

  • Create an environment where all members of your household know it’s fine to discuss body image openly and any worries they may have
  • Promote the idea that physical health is not the same as appearance. Regular exercise in the fresh air, combined with balanced eating habits not leading to self denial, and good sleep hygiene are essential for good mental health
  • Encourage any male members of your household to be themselves, irrespective of societal expectations.
  • If you do have any concerns that your child may be exhibiting distress or anxiety linked to appearance, contact the school so that we can work together to provide early help. This may be vital in preventing an escalation to more serious mental health concerns.
  • Social media can be a powerful tool for gathering information and staying connected, but it also presents risk. Awareness and open dialogue are the most effective means to mitigate this risk.
