Careers: Thurston Sixth
Towards the end of the academic year, we begin the process of preparing our Year 12 students for life after Sixth Form. Following a visit to the UCAS Exhibition at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich, students undertake an exciting week of activities to begin their preparation for life ‘Beyond Beyton’.
Our week long programme aims to give our students comprehensive guidance on their ‘next steps’ whether it be employment, apprenticeships, university or a gap year. We work hard to make this a bespoke event for each student, tailoring talks from guest speakers to meet their requests.
Our Careers Carousel offers an insight into various career paths from a range of professionals and provides the opportunity for students to ask questions. Our experts come from many different industries, trades and professions to inspire and inform our students, ranging from ex-students to engineers, nurses, psychologists and artists.
University Guidance offers advice and guidance on completing the UCAS application, writing personal statements, student finance and life as an undergraduate, whether students wish to study Art, Humanities, STEM or Social Sciences subjects. Experts from local universities are able to answer student questions on the vast array of options available to them, both post A Level and postgraduate.
The Employability and Apprenticeship Day gives our students the experience of ‘real life’ recruitment. From filling in the application form, writing a good CV and undergoing the interview process, students are guided through the preparation needed for higher level apprenticeships and employment.
Following Beyond Beyton week students are advised to seek appropriate work experience and volunteering opportunities that can increase their competitiveness during the application process, whether for employment or higher education.
Beyond Beyton links into the Sixth Form Tutoring programme as part of Careers Guidance which is delivered throughout Years 12 and 13. All resources are uploaded and available to students via Google Classroom.
