Thurston's Community

We are all very aware of our deeply inclusive community here at Thurston Community College. Whether it be with the teachers supporting this school, the many staff that build the foundations of our learning or the students that make up this educational facility, we are all a community together, but what about the community outside of school? There is a whole supportive and helpful village outside of our school’s gates and in this article, we shall be exploring the importance of great people that connect us and our neighbourhoods into a unified and thriving village.

Here we shall delve deeper into the extraordinary work done by the Thurston Parish Council. But what even is a parish council? It is a group of people that serve as a local authority that makes decisions on how Thurston or any other settlement can be better on behalf of the people. They successfully improve many aspects of this village to let it live on as a great and enjoyable place to live. Local councils and councillors like them aim to better the people of Thurston’s lives and seek to make a change and a difference to improve the quality of life in this community. They are exceptionally passionate about their work and how they can improve the quality of life even more in their community. But what does a councillor do? They do more than you or I would ever know. It can involve developing strategies and plans for areas, helping with new ideas, problems and decisions, working with other local groups and working with, listening to and representing the community.

However, it’s not just the council that makes up this village’s community. An important part of every village is the locally owned businesses that give life to Thurston and keep many refreshed, happy and lively. Many are locally sourced such as the Thurston butchers. Here, they not only sell locally gathered produce but also extremely cheap and ethically sourced meats and goods. But if you are more interested in getting a coffee and snack, I recommend the Thurst Cafe. This coffee shop sells all sorts of drinks and home-baked pastries as well as the opportunity to enjoy a delicious light lunch. In addition, they have outdoor and indoor play areas. Finally, the Fox & Hounds Free House is perfect for all the family. Not only do they serve the finest of beers and food, they also offer outdoor bistro-style seating, sports, darts and games, music and on the first Sunday of every month, quiz and bingo nights that provide entertainment to all of Thurston's community.
